How TalkGroup works
TalkGroup connects phones directly to each other, with no internet or cell service needed. People in the same group talk push-to-talk style through their AirPods. Everything stays between the phones in the group.
Common questions
Groups
Why did my group disappear? Without the Permanent groups upgrade, a group is removed from your phone after an hour with nobody else from the group in range. You get warnings at 30, 15, and 5 minutes. A temporary public group ends 24 hours after it was created.
How do I keep my groups? Buy Permanent groups in Settings, under Upgrades. It is a one-time purchase and applies to the phone you buy it on.
Who decides how people join and how the group talks? In a public group, the host. In a private group, the members vote.
Why does it say someone is out of range? Their phone has been out of reach of yours for more than 15 seconds. You get another message when they are back. A walk to the bathroom is enough.
What are quick signals? One-tap messages like On my way or Meet here, shown on a group screen. Everyone can use them, and they are free. They disappear after a few minutes.
Joining
How do I join a group? Public groups appear under Nearby when you are in range. Depending on the group, the host approves you, any member can approve you, you enter a password, or you are let straight in. Private groups are hidden. Scan the group's invite QR code or tap phones with a member.
How do I join a private group? Tap the scan icon on the main screen. Scan the group invite QR code, or paste the invite link someone sent you. You can also tap an invite link in a message. The person who invited you has to be in range, and someone in the group still has to let you in.
Can I try the app without anyone nearby? Yes. Settings has a switch called Try with pretend nearby phones. Nothing is sent while it is on.
Chat and purchases
Why is chat locked? Chat works while someone from your group who owns Text chat is in range, and any time if you own it yourself. It is a one-time purchase in Settings, under Upgrades.
How do I restore a purchase? Settings, then Upgrades, then Restore purchases. Use the same Apple ID you bought with.
Why was my name, nickname, or message refused? Names, nicknames, and messages are checked against a list of offensive words on your phone. Try different wording.
Safety and privacy
How do I report someone or block them? In a group, press and hold their name in the member list and choose Report or Block. In chat, press and hold their message. Reports open an email for you to read and send. Blocking hides their messages, mutes their voice, and turns away their requests to join. To undo it, go to Settings, then Blocked people.
What is the difference between muting and blocking? Press and hold a name. Mute voice stops playing that person's voice on your phone, and they can still chat and talk to everyone else. Block also hides their messages and turns away their requests to join.
What is the privacy shield? The eye icon on a group screen swaps everyone's private nicknames for their public names, in case someone nearby can see your screen. It stays on until you switch it off.
How do I delete my data? There is no account. Deleting the app removes your groups, chat, and settings from your phone. See the Privacy Policy for details.
How do I get a new ID? Your ID stays the same on purpose, so that blocking works. If you have a real need for a new one, go to Settings, then Reset ID, and copy your support ID. Email it to support@talkgroup.app with the reason. If we agree, we will send you a code that works on your phone only. Paste it into the same screen. Your groups and chat on that phone are cleared. Your name and blocked people stay.
Good to know
- Range depends on your surroundings. Crowds and walls shorten it.
- TalkGroup is for casual use. Do not rely on it for emergencies.
